Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1964. Forty-four families from Gethsemane Star decided to organize a church that began to meet in the basement of Stone Temple Baptist Church on West Douglas Blvd.

As the church was having services in the basement of Stone Temple, the Thompson Community Singers under the direction of the late Reverend Milton R. Brunson were rehearsing upstairs. The Deacons decided to approach Reverend Brunson and asked him to become the Pastor of Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church.

With about one hundred members, the church moved to A.R. Rayner Funeral Home for six months. As the membership continued to grow the church needed a larger place for worship, which led the move to 4244 W. Madison Ave. At the Madison Avenue location the church became known for our 11:00 p.m. radio broadcast every Sunday night.

In 1976, the church moved to 854 N. Central Avenue and changed their name to Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church of Austin with a membership of over 700 people. The late Reverend Milton Brunson, was called home on April 1, 1997 after serving as Pastor for thirty-three years. Christ Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church of Austin has always been a community based church founded on the principles of love, hope, and faith. We continue to strive to serve the Austin community by sharing the salvation and love of Jesus Christ.
